What is the difference between a DNV/Offshore container and an ISO container?

7/18/2019

DNV 2.7-1 is a standard of certification for offshore containers. As defined by the international Maritime Organization an offshore containers is a “portable unit, specially designed for repeated use in the transport of goods or equipment to from or between fixed and/or floating offshore installations and ships”.

Exposure to harsh environments.

Most of the ISO shipping containers sometimes also known as sea containers are made from the weathering steel commonly called as the “Cor-ten” steel, This is a type of steel that is corrosion resistant mainly utilized within different industries in which exposed steel sections are needed such as building sculptures, facades, and panels.

Unlike ISO containers, DNV2.7-1 offshore containers are often left exposed to open seas on the decks of supply vessels and loaded to platforms in harsh weather conditions. Therefore, the primary structure requires material of enough toughness to withstand minus 20 degree Celsius. DNV 2.7-1 Offshore Modules built for Hazardous -Zone 1 Zone 2 to Create a safe area environment for personnel and equipment.

Loading and unloading forces.

Offshore containers can’t be applied with standard container lifting equipment and the alternative methods of loading and unloading put different types of pressure on the structures of DNV containers. Offshore containers are supplied with a permanently installed sling set.

ISO container has a shell construction that is not suitable for high impact loads, ISO don’t have pad eyes but ISO corners
