How Can You Identify Hazardous Areas and Why Choose TLS Offshore Containers?

6/24/2024

When it comes to industrial safety, especially in offshore environments, understanding and managing hazardous areas is crucial. These areas are typically classified into zones based on the frequency and duration of the presence of explosive atmospheres. In this blog, we'll explore the definitions and distinctions between Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 hazardous areas, and highlight the advantages of using pressure containers made by TLS Offshore Containers in such environments.

What are Hazardous Areas?
Hazardous areas are locations where flammable gases, vapors, or dust are present in the air in sufficient quantities to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures. Port of Singapore Faces Increased Vessel Bunching Due to Global Supply Chain Disruptions

6/9/2024

The diversion of vessels around the Cape of Good Hope has significantly disrupted vessel arrival schedules at major ports globally, causing off-schedule arrivals and a "vessels bunching" effect, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

This phenomenon has also impacted the Port of Singapore, one of the world's busiest ports, which has seen a "significant increase" in vessel arrivals since the beginning of 2024.

In response to media inquiries about the extended waiting times for berths in the Port of Singapore, MPA reported that container volumes handled in the first four months of 2024 reached 13.36 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking an 8.8% increase over the same period last year.

"For container vessels, we have observed large increases in container volumes and the 'bunching' of arrivals over recent months due to upstream supply chain disruptions," MPA stated.

The increased number of off-schedule container vessel arrivals and higher container volumes in Singapore have led to longer wait times for container berths. While most container vessels are berthed upon arrival, the port operator PSA has collaborated with liners to adjust arrival schedules where possible. When adjustments are not feasible, the average waiting time for container vessels is about two to three days.

The increased demand for container handling in Singapore results from several container lines discharging more containers in Singapore to catch up on their next schedules. Additionally, the number of containers handled per vessel has increased.

Besides the increased demands, container lines are leveraging PSA's cargo handling capabilities to manage container stowage onboard vessels and facilitate quick cargo discharge for subsequent port calls. This reliance on PSA highlights the confidence container liners have in the port.

Since late 2023, MPA, together with the Ministry of Transport (MOT), has been working with PSA and the industry to prepare for higher vessel arrivals. PSA has added more manpower and container handling capacity, reactivated older berths and yards at Keppel Terminal, and increased weekly container handling from 770,000 TEUs to 820,000 TEUs.

Three new berths at Tuas Port will commence operations later this year, increasing overall port handling capacity. PSA plans to expedite these new berths to boost container handling capacity in the near term.

MPA and PSA are closely coordinating with container lines and regional feeders to update them on berth availability and advise on arrival times to minimize berthing delays.

"There is no delayed berthing experienced for other vessels that call at Singapore, which constitutes about two-thirds of vessel arrivals," MPA stated. "Currently, there is no crowding in the anchorages."

MOT and MPA will continue to collaborate with PSA to optimize the port's capabilities and capacity to minimize berth wait times, including proactive planning with container lines on their arrival times versus berth availability.

Meanwhile, MPA noted that tanker and bulk vessel segments, including resupply and bunkering activities within the anchorages, remain unaffected.

The Key Role of Battery Management Systems (BMS) in Energy Storage Success

6/5/2024

Battery management systems (BMS) are essential for the optimal functioning of energy storage systems, including those used in electric vehicles, energy storage stations, and base station power supplies. BMS acts as the backbone of energy storage, providing critical sensing, decision-making, and execution functions. This article explores the unique requirements of BMS in energy storage systems and highlights their vital role in ensuring system success.

**High Voltage and Current Environment**

Energy storage systems operate in high-voltage and high-current environments. Battery packs often reach voltages of up to 700V and currents between 100 to 300 amperes. Deep cycle batteries experience discharge and charge depths (DOD) typically around 80% or higher. These conditions necessitate a robust and reliable BMS to manage and monitor the battery pack effectively.

**Unique Requirements of Energy Storage BMS**

1. **Complex System Design and Coordination:**
   - Energy storage systems usually have MWh-level storage capacity and power conversion rates from hundreds of kW to MW, requiring numerous batteries to be connected in series and parallel. This complex configuration demands a BMS with advanced circuit principles, anti-interference EMC design, efficient data processing capabilities, and rapid response times. Additionally, the overall system layout, wiring, and grounding must be meticulously planned to ensure safety and signal integrity.

2. **Battery Balancing:**
   - Consistent performance among individual cells within a battery pack is crucial for maximizing available capacity and system efficiency. BMS must feature strong battery balancing capabilities, typically using active balancing techniques with balancing currents ranging from 0.5 to 5A. This ensures uniform charge and discharge cycles, reducing discrepancies and enhancing overall performance.

3. **Thermal Management:**
   - Proper temperature control is vital for battery longevity. High charging and discharging currents in energy storage systems, particularly those used for frequency regulation and peak shaving, can lead to significant heating and uneven discharge rates. Effective thermal management strategies, including BMS-controlled thermal management, efficient cooling pathways, and well-designed battery module heat dissipation, are essential. Liquid cooling systems often provide superior thermal management. Monitoring battery temperature accurately is critical for preventing thermal runaway and maintaining battery health.

4. **Parallel Battery Control:**
   - When using multiple batteries in parallel, it's essential to manage voltage differences to prevent circulating currents and ensure balanced maintenance across all battery packs.

5. **Advanced Processing and Response:**
   - The complexity and scale of energy storage systems require BMS control units to possess sophisticated processing power and quick response times. The system's complexity demands high standards for processors, software architecture, and code quality.

6. **Reliability and Safety:**
   - Energy storage systems require exceptionally high safety and reliability standards. BMS must meet stringent functional safety and fault tolerance requirements to ensure the system's long-term reliability, typically designed for a lifespan of 15 years.

7. **Preemptive Safety Measures:**
   - One of the main challenges in the energy storage industry is ensuring system safety. BMS plays a crucial role in early warning and safety state analysis of batteries. While current BMS technology can monitor voltage and temperature in real-time, improvements in accuracy and computational capacity are necessary. Enhanced interference resistance and precise monitoring of individual cell temperatures are essential for effective thermal runaway prevention.

**Conclusion**

The development and design of BMS for energy storage systems must be tailored to meet the evolving demands of longer lifecycle, larger size, and increased complexity. A well-designed BMS ensures the safety, reliability, and efficiency of energy storage systems, making it an indispensable component. As the industry continues to advance, the role of BMS in managing battery safety and performance becomes increasingly critical, underscoring its importance in the success of energy storage systems.
