Summary

A 5MWh battery paired with a 2.5MW power conversion system has a nominal energy-to-power ratio of two hours. Whether it can deliver 2.5MW for two hours at the grid connection depends on usable energy, losses, and the agreed operating conditions.

The pairing starts with energy divided by power

MWh measures stored energy. MW measures the rate at which energy is transferred. Dividing energy by power gives a duration: 5MWh / 2.5MW = 2 hours. This relationship explains the pairing for applications targeting approximately two hours of discharge. It is a sizing relationship, not a rule that every 5MWh battery must use a 2.5MW PCS. The distinction between energy, power, and duration is explained in the NREL storage FAQs.

The PCS converts battery DC power to AC during discharge and performs the reverse conversion during charging. Its power rating must be coordinated with the battery's permitted operating limits and the site's requirements.

What does 0.5P mean?

In energy-based battery power notation, 0.5P means a power level numerically equal to half the nominal energy rating per hour. For an approximately 5MWh battery, this corresponds to approximately 2.5MW.

The TLS reference model ESS-ES5016C-LP71173207 has approximately 5.016MWh nominal energy and a stated 2.5MW charge/discharge rating at 0.5P. The quotient is approximately 2.006 hours before operating restrictions and losses. This small arithmetic difference does not establish a guaranteed two-hour AC discharge.

Why nominal duration differs from delivered duration

The nominal battery rating does not specify how much energy is available at the point of connection. A defined state-of-charge window can reserve part of the stored energy. Battery aging can reduce available capacity, while conversion losses and auxiliary loads affect net output.

Consider an illustrative system with 5MWh nominal energy, a 90% usable energy fraction and 96% discharge-path efficiency. Excluding auxiliary loads, it would deliver 5 × 0.90 × 0.96 = 4.32MWh, or about 1.73 hours at 2.5MW. These are hypothetical assumptions, not TLS performance figures. A project calculation must also account for auxiliaries at the agreed meter boundary.

Use discharge-path efficiency for a discharge calculation. Round-trip efficiency includes both charging and discharging losses and should not be substituted directly.

Could a different PCS rating be used?

A lower power rating can extend nominal discharge duration: 5MWh divided by 1.25MW is four hours. A higher rating shortens the arithmetic duration, but the battery must support the corresponding current and power. Installing a larger PCS alone cannot increase the battery's permitted output.

Compatibility requires more than matching MW. Check the PCS DC voltage window, current limits, battery operating envelope, and control interface. Required reactive power can also affect available active power within the PCS apparent-power rating. The selected design must satisfy the grid connection requirements under the agreed conditions.

Start the enquiry with the duty requirement

For procurement, specify the required net AC power, discharge duration, measurement point, and capacity requirement at the relevant year of operation. Then ask the supplier to size the battery and PCS together.

For example, “2.5MW net AC for two hours at the point of connection at the specified end-of-life condition” is more precise than “one 5MWh container.” It defines a 5MWh delivered-energy requirement at that boundary. The installed nominal battery energy may need to be higher.

FAQ

Will charging always take two hours?

No. Charging duration depends on starting and target state of charge, available input power, losses and any battery control limits during the charging cycle.

Does a 2.5MW battery rating guarantee 2.5MW net export?

No. Battery DC power, PCS AC output and net power at the site connection are different measurement boundaries. Confirm where the quoted rating applies.

Is two-hour storage the best choice for every project?

No. The required load profile and service determine the appropriate power and duration. A short peak and an extended energy-shifting duty can require different configurations.
