Summary
A 5MWh liquid-cooled battery container combines battery storage with cooling, battery management and protective systems. Buyers should confirm where the container supply ends and responsibility for AC conversion, site controls and installation begins.
What is inside the container?
A battery energy storage system (BESS) container typically houses battery modules and racks, a battery management system (BMS), liquid-cooling equipment, internal DC connections and protective systems. The MWh rating describes energy capacity; it does not define the complete equipment list.
For a concrete example, the TLS 5MWh reference configuration, model ESS-ES5016C-LP71173207, has approximately 5.016MWh nominal energy and a 2.5MW charge/discharge rating at 0.5P. Its baseline includes liquid cooling, a three-level BMS, integrated fire detection and suppression, a water interface, and an IP55 20ft enclosure. These are reference-configuration details; the project specification and agreed supply scope govern the delivered equipment.
Battery modules and DC equipment
Cells are assembled into modules and racks to achieve the required energy and DC voltage. Internal connections carry power from the battery assemblies toward the external conversion equipment. Isolation, protection and monitoring must work together so faults can be detected and affected equipment disconnected as designed.
Ask for a single-line diagram and an equipment list showing the battery terminals, protection devices and supply boundary. A description such as “battery container included” does not establish who supplies the external DC cables or their terminations.
Liquid cooling and battery management
Liquid cooling transfers heat from the battery assemblies through a coolant circuit. The reference configuration includes a chiller rated at 60kW of cooling capacity. That figure describes heat-removal capacity, not the electrical power the chiller consumes. Auxiliary electricity demand requires separate confirmation under defined operating conditions.
The BMS monitors battery conditions and communicates operating limits. A three-level arrangement coordinates measurements and control across successive battery assembly levels. It helps determine when charging or discharging must be limited or stopped. Site scheduling is a separate control function, normally handled by an energy management system (EMS).
Protective systems and the enclosure
The reference configuration includes fire detection and suppression provisions plus a water interface. The final fire-system design, external connections and site response arrangements require project-specific review. A component list alone does not demonstrate regulatory acceptance or complete site fire protection.
The enclosure provides mechanical and environmental protection. IP55 is an ingress-protection classification; it does not establish flood resistance or suitability for every installation environment. Installation requirements must be checked against the actual site.
Does the container include the PCS and transformer?
The power conversion system (PCS) converts between battery DC power and AC power. A transformer, switchgear, plant controls and site cabling may also be needed. Their inclusion and physical location depend on the contracted delivery level. TLS describes several integration levels on its BESS container page.
Before ordering, confirm:
- Which batteries, auxiliaries and protective systems are factory installed.
- Whether the PCS, transformer, switchgear and EMS are included.
- Who supplies external cables, communications and auxiliary power.
- Who performs installation, integration testing and commissioning.
A clear scope boundary makes quotations comparable and reduces missing work at site.
FAQ
Is 5MWh the energy delivered to the grid?
Not automatically. Nominal battery energy and usable AC energy are different quantities. The operating window, losses, auxiliary consumption and measurement point affect delivered energy.
Does liquid cooling guarantee a particular efficiency?
No. Cooling is one part of the system. Any efficiency claim needs a defined test cycle, temperature, power level and measurement boundary.
Is a water interface a complete site fire-protection system?
No. Its purpose, connection requirements and relationship to the wider fire strategy must be confirmed for the project.
