How TLS Paints Offshore Containers for Maximum Corrosion Resistance?

11/8/2024

Offshore shipping containers endure some of the harshest environments on earth, facing extreme temperatures, high humidity, and salt exposure. These conditions create an aggressive atmosphere for corrosion, which can compromise the container’s structural integrity and longevity. TLS recognizes these challenges and has developed a specialized coating process for offshore containers to ensure they remain resilient, reliable, and ready for demanding offshore applications.

TLS’s Coating Process for Offshore Containers
The TLS coating process is a multi-step procedure designed to provide the highest level of protection for offshore containers, extending their life span and keeping them in optimal condition. Below are the steps TLS follows to achieve a durable, corrosion-resistant coating:

1. Preprocessing: Laying the Groundwork for Long-Term Protection
The first step in the TLS coating process is preprocessing, which involves cleaning the steel surfaces of the container. This step removes contaminants like oxide scale, rust, grease, and dirt that could prevent proper adhesion of the primer and final coatings. During preprocessing, TLS applies a zinc-rich primer using an automated assembly line right after shot-blasting. This primer acts as an initial protective layer, keeping the steel safe from oxidation throughout the manufacturing process. The zinc-rich primer also plays a key role in enhancing the container’s corrosion resistance in offshore conditions.

2. Shot-Blasting: Preparing the Surface for an Even Coating
After preprocessing, TLS shot-blasts the entire container to further enhance surface cleanliness and ensure optimal adhesion of the coating. Special attention is given to welds and heat-sensitive areas to ensure they are thoroughly shot-blasted. This step removes any burrs, bumps, dust, or dirt from the steel surface, providing a smooth and consistent foundation for the following layers. Edges and rough-cut areas are ground to a radius of at least 2mm to prevent sharp edges that could weaken the coating.

3. Pre-Coating: Protecting Hard-to-Reach Areas
Certain areas of the container, such as plate edges, welds, bolt holes, and corners, are more vulnerable to corrosion due to their geometry and exposure. TLS pre-coats these areas to ensure they receive additional protection. By addressing these zones before the full spray coating, TLS ensures a uniform protective barrier across the entire container surface, even in difficult-to-coat areas.

4. Spray Coating: Achieving Uniform and Thorough Coverage
TLS applies the main coating in multiple layers through a controlled spray process. Each layer is applied evenly to avoid defects like sags, drips, pinholes, blisters, and other coating failures. This attention to detail guarantees that each layer bonds properly and enhances the overall durability of the coating. The final coating provides an unbroken barrier against moisture, salt, and other corrosive elements, ensuring the container’s longevity.

5. Drying: Accelerating the Curing Process
After each coat, the container undergoes a drying phase to speed up curing. This curing process helps the coating layers form a hard, resilient shell, creating a protective layer that is resistant to chipping, peeling, and fading. TLS utilizes water-soluble, environmentally friendly paints, which are safe for the environment and provide excellent protection against corrosion.

Why TLS Offshore Containers Outperform in Harsh Environments
TLS’s commitment to quality is evident in every container they produce. TLS containers are designed not only to survive but to thrive in challenging offshore environments. By employing rigorous coating standards and environmentally friendly, water-soluble paints, TLS ensures that its containers are resistant to corrosion, paint failure, fading, and discoloration. This meticulous approach guarantees that TLS offshore containers retain their strength and appearance over time, providing lasting value and reliability.

Whether transporting equipment, materials, or critical supplies, TLS offshore containers are a dependable choice that meets the highest standards in durability and performance. With TLS’s expertise in corrosion-resistant coating processes, offshore operators can trust their containers to withstand the elements and keep their contents safe.
