TLS Energy played a dual role in this project, both as the manufacturer of the BESS units and as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor, showcasing its expertise in delivering comprehensive energy solutions. This system is specifically designed for Fast Frequency Response (FFR) and Frequency Containment Reserve for Disturbances (FCR-D) applications, contributing to Sweden’s renewable energy goals.

Project Overview: Cutting-Edge Technology and Design

This advanced 6MW/6MWh BESS project consists of:

    •    Two DC Containers: Each DC container houses a 3.79MW 1C BESS unit, designed and manufactured by TLS Energy. These systems are built for efficient energy storage and rapid response. The 1C rating means each container can discharge its full capacity in one hour, making it ideal for grid applications that require fast, high-power output. With robust lithium-ion battery technology and a state-of-the-art battery management system (BMS), the containers ensure operational safety and optimal energy performance.
    •    Two AC Containers: The AC containers are essential for grid integration, equipped with power conversion systems (PCS), transformers, and switchgear. These components convert the stored DC energy from the BESS into AC power that can be safely fed into the grid. The transformers adjust voltage levels for smooth grid integration, while the switchgear ensures protection and control of the electrical flow.

Tailored for FFR and FCR-D Grid Applications

The BESS system was specifically designed for two key grid stabilization applications: Fast Frequency Response (FFR) and Frequency Containment Reserve for Disturbances (FCR-D).

    •    FFR: In the rapidly changing renewable energy landscape, FFR is essential for maintaining grid frequency within tight parameters, especially during times of sudden energy fluctuations from renewable sources like wind and solar. The system provides an immediate response, ensuring grid stability.
    •    FCR-D: FCR-D applications help manage unexpected grid disturbances caused by supply and demand imbalances. The BESS delivers stored energy swiftly to stabilize frequency and prevent larger disruptions or blackouts.

These applications are crucial as Sweden works towards reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and increasing its renewable energy capacity. The BESS project ensures the reliability and stability of the power grid, even as renewable energy penetration increases.
